Dr Syn
Russell Thorndike, born in Rochester, Kent, in 1885, was a British actor and novelist best known for the Dr. Syn of Romney Marsh novels. Initially an actor, his military service in World War I ended after being severely wounded at Gallipoli. The inspiration for the character of Dr. Syn came during a sleepless night spent with his sister, Dame Sybil Thorndike, after a murder occurred near their hotel. Thorndike adapted his own novels into plays and published seven Dr. Syn books during his lifetime. Several film adaptations followed, bringing the stories to life, notably in the village of Dymchurch, where he is now buried. He passed away in 1972, leaving a legacy that spans literature, theater, and cinema.
